A new computer should be exciting. Instead, the first evening usually goes like this: two hours of updates, a pile of trial software you never asked for, a printer that "can't be found," and the slow realization that your photos, bookmarks, and passwords are all still on the old machine. York Computer Repair takes that whole job off your hands. Bring your new and old computers to our walk-in shop at 2069 Carlisle Rd, York, PA 17408, and you pick up one machine that is updated, cleaned up, protected, and already holding your stuff. We help customers across York, Shiloh, Dover, West York, and the rest of York County.
Setup isn't glamorous, but it is where a lot of future problems start. A skipped driver, a missed update, or an old account carried over the wrong way can cause headaches months later. We do the same careful checklist every time, so the machine starts life the way it should.
New PC Setup
- ✓ Windows first-run setup & user accounts
- ✓ All Windows & driver updates installed
- ✓ Trial software & bloatware removed
- ✓ Antivirus installed and checked
- ✓ Browser, email & everyday apps installed
- ✓ Backup and restore point configured
Brand-new computers ship months behind on updates and loaded with "free trials" that nag you forever. We run every update until there are none left, strip the junk, set up your account the way you want it, and make sure your security software is actually working — not just installed. If you bought your computer from us through our new computer sales, this is already part of the deal. If you bought it somewhere else, we're happy to set it up too.
Data Transfer From Your Old Computer
- ✓ Documents, photos, music & videos
- ✓ Browser bookmarks & saved logins
- ✓ Desktop files & folder layout
- ✓ Email and Outlook data (where possible)
This is the part most people worry about, and for good reason — family photos and tax files aren't something you can re-download. We copy your files from the old Windows computer to the new one, put them back where you expect to find them, and check that they open before we hand anything back. Your old computer stays untouched until you've confirmed everything made it across. If the old machine won't boot at all, that's no problem in most cases; we can usually pull files straight off its drive. If the drive itself is failing, we'll stop and talk to you about data recovery first.
Printer & Wi-Fi Setup
Printers are famous for working on Tuesday and disappearing on Wednesday. We install the correct manufacturer driver (not the generic one Windows guesses at), connect the printer over USB or Wi-Fi, run a test page, and set it as your default so it shows up every time. On the network side, we connect your computer to your Wi-Fi, check that it holds the connection, and run a speed test so you know whether a slow internet complaint is the computer, the router, or your provider. Got a stubborn wireless printer at home or at the office? Call us — we'll tell you whether it's easier to bring the computer in or whether an on-site visit makes more sense.
Small-Office Workstation Setup
Getting a new hire's computer ready, or replacing a few desks' worth of PCs at once? We set up Windows workstations for small offices in York County: Windows updates, user accounts, everyday business software, shared printers, and copying files from the old machine. Each computer is ready to use on day one instead of eating an afternoon of someone's time. This is one-time setup work — if you're looking for ongoing IT support or monitoring for your whole business, ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.
Heads-up: We set up Windows PCs and laptops only — HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Razer, Samsung, LG, and custom builds. Other operating systems are outside our specialty. Not sure what you have? Give us a quick call before you drive over.
How It Works
Call ahead or walk in during business hours with your new computer, your old computer (and its charger), and any passwords you'll need — your Microsoft account and email are the big ones. Tell us what you use the computer for and which programs matter most. We'll handle the setup and data transfer, then walk you through what we did when you pick it up. If we spot a problem along the way, like a dying drive in the old machine, we explain it before doing anything extra. You decide what happens next. Call 717-739-9675 for current setup pricing. Is your old computer worth keeping as a backup? A maintenance check or an SSD upgrade can sometimes give it a second life.

Computer Setup FAQs
Can you set up a computer I bought somewhere else? +
Yes. We set up new Windows PCs and laptops no matter where you bought them — big-box stores, online, or straight from the manufacturer.
Will my files be safe during the data transfer? +
Yes. We copy your files rather than move them, so the old computer keeps its copy until you've confirmed everything arrived on the new one.
What should I bring? +
Your new computer, your old computer with its charger or power cord, and the passwords for your Microsoft account and email. If you're setting up a printer, the printer's model number helps.
Do you come out to set up printers and Wi-Fi? +
Most setup work happens at our shop, but we do offer on-site service in the York area when bringing equipment in isn't practical. Call 717-739-9675 and we'll let you know if a visit makes sense.
Do you serve Shiloh, Dover, and West York? +
Yes — customers regularly come in from Shiloh, Dover, West York, Spring Garden, Manchester, East York, and the rest of York County, PA. Our Carlisle Road shop is easy to reach from most of the county.
