Most computers don't break all at once. They wear down. Startup takes a little longer every month, the fan gets louder, an update fails and quietly tries again, and one day a program just closes on you mid-sentence. None of it is bad enough to call a repair shop — until it is. A Maintenance Check is how you catch those problems while they are still small. York Computer Repair runs it at our walk-in shop at 2069 Carlisle Rd, York, PA 17408 for customers across York, Shiloh, Dover, West York, and the rest of York County.
Think of it like an oil change and inspection for your PC. We don't guess and we don't just run one "cleaner" program. We go through the same 19 checks on every machine, write down what we find, fix what can be fixed during the visit, and tell you plainly about anything that needs a decision from you — like a hard drive that is starting to fail.
The 19 Checks
Every Maintenance Check covers the same list, grouped here by what each check protects:
Storage & memory
- ✓ 1. Hard drive / SSD health
- ✓ 2. Drive speed test
- ✓ 3. RAM quantity check
- ✓ 4. Disk usage under load
Drives give warning signs before they die — reallocated sectors, rising error counts, read speeds far below what the drive was built for. We read those numbers directly. If your drive is on its way out, you hear about it while your photos and documents are still recoverable, not after. We also check whether the machine simply has too little memory for how you use it, which is one of the most common reasons an otherwise healthy PC feels slow.
Updates
- ✓ 5. Windows updates
- ✓ 6. Third-party app updates
- ✓ 7. Firmware / BIOS updates
A lot of "my computer is acting weird" comes down to updates that got stuck halfway. We clear failed Windows updates, bring browsers and everyday programs current (outdated apps are a favorite way in for attackers), and check whether the manufacturer has released a BIOS or firmware fix for your exact model.
Security
- ✓ 8. Security status review
- ✓ 9. Next-gen antivirus check
- ✓ 10. Malicious browser extensions
- ✓ 11. Potentially unwanted programs (PUPs)
- ✓ 12. Remote-session blocking
- ✓ 13. Ongoing protection review
We confirm your antivirus is actually running and up to date, pull out the browser extensions and bundled "helper" programs that sneak in with free downloads, and lock down the remote-access tools that tech-support scammers use to take over a computer. If we find an active infection, we'll stop and show you before doing anything more — that becomes a virus and malware cleanup rather than routine maintenance. Last, we'll tell you honestly whether ongoing protection makes sense for how you use the machine, or whether you're fine on your own.
Stability & performance
- ✓ 14. System File Checker (SFC) scan
- ✓ 15. Reliability history review
- ✓ 16. CPU usage
- ✓ 17. GPU usage
Windows quietly keeps a diary of every crash, freeze, and failed install. Almost nobody looks at it — we do. Reading your Reliability History shows patterns like the same app crashing every day or a driver that fails every time the PC wakes from sleep. System File Checker compares core Windows files against clean copies and repairs the ones damaged by power blips or hard shutdowns. Then we watch the processor and graphics chip at idle to catch anything burning resources in the background.
Hardware & connection
- ✓ 18. Fan & case cleaning (desktops)
- ✓ 19. Internet speed check
Dust is the slow killer of desktop PCs. A clogged heatsink makes the fan scream and the processor throttle itself to stay cool. On desktops we open the case and clean the fans and filters. We also run a speed test so you know whether "the internet is slow" is your computer, your Wi-Fi, or your provider.
Heads-up: We service Windows PCs and laptops only — HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Razer, Samsung, LG, and custom builds. Other operating systems are outside our specialty. Not sure what you have? Give us a quick call before you drive over.
Who It's For
A Maintenance Check is a good fit if your computer still works but has gotten slower, louder, or less predictable; if it hasn't been looked at in a year or more; or if you rely on it for work or school and would rather find problems on your schedule than in the middle of a deadline. It's also smart before you hand a computer down to a family member. If your machine won't turn on, has a cracked screen, or has a specific failure, that's a repair — start with desktop repair or laptop repair instead. And if the check shows your drive is simply slow rather than sick, an SSD or RAM upgrade is usually the biggest speed-up per dollar.
How It Works
Walk in during business hours or call ahead. Tell us what's been bugging you — that helps us know where to look first. We run all 19 checks, fix what's routine during the visit, and give you a plain-English rundown of what we found. Anything bigger than maintenance, like a failing drive or an infection, we explain and quote before doing any extra work. You decide what happens next. Maintenance Check FAQs
How often should I get a computer maintenance check? +
For most home computers, once a year is plenty. If the PC runs a business, lives in a dusty room or around pets, or gets heavy daily use, every six months is better.
Do I need an appointment? +
No — walk-ins are welcome Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, at 2069 Carlisle Rd, York, PA 17408. Call 717-739-9675 if you'd like to plan a drop-off time.
Will I lose any files or programs? +
No. A Maintenance Check doesn't wipe or reinstall Windows. We only remove things that shouldn't be there — like unwanted bundled programs or malicious browser extensions — and we'll tell you what we removed.
What happens if you find a bigger problem? +
We stop and tell you. A failing drive, an active infection, or a hardware fault is explained and quoted before any additional work. Nothing extra happens without your OK.
Do you serve Shiloh, Dover, and West York? +
Yes — customers regularly come in from Shiloh, Dover, West York, Spring Garden, Manchester, East York, and the rest of York County, PA. Our Carlisle Road shop is easy to reach from most of the county.
