What's broken in KB5121003
The August 11 cumulative update for Windows 11 was a massive one — Microsoft's August 2026 Patch Tuesday update patches up to 421 security issues, and Microsoft's advisory tells users not to delay it by more than 3 days . But installing it has created a new set of headaches.
The update is causing a false virus alert, game crashes, PIN failures, display glitches, dead USB on some AMD PCs, and broken printing in business apps . The most alarming symptom for regular users is a post-update notification claiming Windows Defender is disabled when it isn't — Microsoft's Patch Tuesday release has triggered a wave of installation failures with error codes like 0x800f0983 and 0xc1900101, alongside a terrifying but fake notification claiming your "Virus Protection is off."
Game crashes have been the most widely reported issue. A limited number of games, including ARC Raiders, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and The Finals, become unresponsive on devices running Windows 11 version 25H2 and version 24H2 . Microsoft's automatic fix (and what it doesn't cover)
On August 26 Microsoft pushed out an automatic fix that stops the inpoutx64 driver loading on any PC that has one of the affected games installed, so the driver can't take the game down with it. Home machines get this through Windows Update on their own — restart your PC and you should be sorted, and Windows shows a message telling you the driver has been disabled, after which the game launches normally .
However, THE FINALS was fixed separately by Embark Studios in a game update of their own, and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls isn't covered yet — Microsoft is still working on that one . The false virus warning, PIN sign-in failures, and USB port issues on some AMD desktops are separate problems that Microsoft has not fully resolved.
Should you uninstall the update?
No — and this matters. You should avoid removing Windows 11 KB5121003 or any cumulative update unless the problems make your PC unusable. The August 2026 update addresses more than 400 security vulnerabilities, and Microsoft has warned users against delaying updates past three days. Windows security threats are only getting worse due to the rise of AI-powered attacks, so you should not remove a security update simply because you've heard that others are having issues .
If your PC is functioning normally after installing the August patch, leave it alone. If it's throwing false malware warnings, refusing to accept your PIN, or losing USB devices, that's a repair job — not a reason to strip out four hundred security fixes. Panicked users pulling the update by hand and clicking through unfamiliar Command Prompt instructions is exactly how personal files get lost, which is why drive recovery cases tend to spike after every messy Patch Tuesday.
What's coming in September
Next month's update will be different. Windows 11 hotpatch devices will require a restart when installing the September 2026 security update, Microsoft has confirmed.
